"It's wonderful, it smarvelous" but it's also an average musical, though it does feature 44. elaborate sets and did win six Oscars. It probably won Best Picture by benefiting from a split vote between A Streetcar Named Desire (1951) and A Place in the Sun (1951.
It does have a great, if long, dance sequence with Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron. And, Oscar Levant and Nina Foch do provide excellent support. Director Vincente Minnelli received his first nomination (he later won for Gigi (1958) another questionable Best Picture winner.
Kelly is a struggling American artist, working in Paris, until he finds a "sugar daddy" er, sugar mommy. in Foch. He pals around with his piano playing friend (Levant) dancing and singing "I Got Rhythm" with street kids. His friend knows a singer (Georges Guétary) that's engaged to a pretty young thing (Caron. When Kelly meets her, he naturally falls in love. He then chases her, trying to "win" her away from her unawares fiancé, much to the dismay of Foch and his friend Levant. Gene Kelly came up with some really grand ideas for musicals while with MGM. Here he's at the top of his creative powers working with the Arthur Freed musical unit. Hard to believe when you watch An American In Paris that the players never left the back lot at MGM.
The magic of An American In Paris is due to the creative editing under the direction of Vincent Minnelli and the sets that MGM designed blended with some background establishing shots. The idea of the film originated with Kelly who wanted simply to do a film with a lengthy ballet sequence involving George Gershwin's tone poem An American in Paris. It sounded good to Arthur Freed who approached Ira Gershwin who said fine with him as long as they used other Gershwin material.
Gershwin got the kind of deal for Gershwin music that Irving Berlin normally got. Not one note of non-Gershwin music is heard in An American in Paris. Listen to some of the background music and you will hear things like Embraceable You and But Not For Me which are not real musical numbers.
Another guy who was a fair hand at writing lyrics, Alan Jay Lerner, wrote the story which admittedly is a thin one. All about an ex-GI played by Gene Kelly who after World War II never left France, just settled into an apartment on the Left Bank and proceeded to become a starving artist. He lives with eccentric composer Oscar Levant and does that ever sound like a redundancy.
Two women are interested in him. Another expatriate American played by Nina Foch who wants to sponsor him as a painter if he'll reciprocate in other matters. But Kelly falls for a shop girl played by Leslie Caron in her film debut. Caron also has musical comedy star Georges Guetary interested in here.
Of course the plot is just an excuse to sing and dance to the music of George Gershwin. An American in Paris happens to be the first film I ever saw as an in flight movie on the first airplane trip I ever took. I still remember flying back from Phoenix Arizona to Kennedy Airport seeing Gene Kelly doing I've Got Rhythm. My favorite number in the film however is Tra-La-La which Kelly sings and dances all over the apartment with Oscar Levant playing the piano. At one point Kelly dances on top of the baby grand piano.
In a book about Arthur Freed, I read a quote where he said in the American in Paris ballet sequence was to be done with the background of the French impressionists which he felt the public would take to rather than a realistic setting on the streets or back lot. So it happened that way. Kelly had done lengthy ballet sequences in Words and Music, The Pirate, and On the Town. But this one topped them all. Still does in my opinion and that includes some of Gene Kelly's later films.
In a surprise upset at the Oscars, An American In Paris was chosen best picture for 1951, beating out the heavily favored A Streetcar Named Desire. I guess fantasy trumped realism that year. Big budgets also have an upper hand in these things as well.
Still An American in Paris is one of the best movie musicals ever done and since the studios no longer have all that creative talent under one roof, something less likely to be repeated.

This is the story of Jerry Mulligan {Gene Kelly} a former American GI living in Paris making paintings and making friends with pianist Adam Cook {Oscar Levant} and singer Henri Baurel {Georges Guetary. He soon finds love in the form of Lise Bouvier {Leslie Caron} but soon romantic problems develop and Lise is not sure of what to do with her future with Jerry.
This is one of the most delicious and most shining musicals around, and the superb score and choreography shows why this film feels not really dated. George and Ira Gershwin has mastered a genius of a lovely score right here, filled with so much many hummable songs such as "I Got Rhythm. Our Love is Here to Stay. Stairway to Paradise" and so much more. This is really and truly better than most of the music we have today. The choreography by Kelly is and truly a revelation. The most memorable of these, the ballet in the end, is one of the most ingenious and wondrous musical numbers we have ever seen in the history of the American musical.
Kelly gives an everyday guy persona to Jerry. Once he becomes a character, we stay with him that way. The way he acts, the way he really dances, the way he sings, he really is a different type of a character. Caron really delivers in her first film role as Lise. She gives a lighting spark of radiance and power to the character. The moments that Kelly and Caron are together, the heart of romance goes aflutter and the viewer suddenly has gone love struck, rooting for them all the way.
Even the supporting cast is feeling the magic as we speak. Levant is very funny and sensational. He delivers the film's comic moment when he conducts his own orchestra performing his own piece in a hilarious dream. Guetary is all dapper and gay. He is truly a wonder performing "Stairway to Paradise. Nina Foch also delivers as Jerry's society friend, Milo. She delivers one of the film's best one liners when waiting for a date with Jerry and another girl, Jerry asks "Who is the other girl? Milo says "Me."
Vincente Minnelli delivers a fantastic film here. Alan Jay Lerner's script is nothing short of delightful. The costumes and the sets by Orry-Kelly, Preston Kelly and Cedric Gibbons, respectively, are full of splendor and life.
This is really a magnificent and can't miss film to watch not just by yourself, but for the whole entire family, even your pet. Rarely has a musical felt so much lovely and perfectly as this.

I remember listening to this on one very memorable morning in 2017, was in senior year of engineering and was driving to my first professional job, it was sunny, radio was tuned to classical music channel and this great piece was playing, at that time i was so engaged with the song and i just imagined the eastern front during WW2, I imagined one day the sun rose on the eastern front and one German StuG III crew were preparing for battle while at the same moment on the other side a soviet T-34 crew were preparing for that same battle on that morning, maybe my deep interest in WW2 history and playing too much War Thunder were contributing factors to why the thought of two opposing crews came to my mind of all other thoughts that could have come to my mind.

Well it's a weird, wild movie that goes to some very strange places for sure. I enjoyed the dark humor, and it can be downright brutal at times too. I really liked the score too, eerie, often sort of whimsical; a great fit. I wasn't completely into some of the directions the story wound up going in, but I do give it credit for doing something different. I had a good time. i think Elijah Wood should play moody e-boys with daddy issues more often. it is  very entertaining. elijah wood cosplaying as an e-boy (that half-baked skrillex haircut! those chipped black nails. in a slow taught domestic daddy issues thriller set along the scenic oregon coast that suddenly goes balls to the wall (literally) insane. yeah i'm gon have to stan on that one Come to Daddy As twisted and unpredictable only a title Come to Daddy could be. B+ Best Films Of The 10's" Twisted, funny, suspenseful, shocking & violent. While I wouldn't call this an all out dark comedy its got its moments. I didn't know where it was going and the story is pretty original. It runs a little slow upfront though and I kinda wanted it to be even more insane at points. Still though, this was a pleasure... The back half made up for any slow parts easily and its just ridiculous enough without going overboard and feeling stupid... Possibly the strongest opener to FrightFest since The Guest. Darkly funny, bizarro, eye-wateringly vicious (never seen scissors and plastic wrap put to such brutal use. and impossible to second guess. It's got a mean streak as wide as a Chelsea Smile, flirting briefly with supernatural and psychodrama moves, before settling into its own psychotic groove. As you might expect, given the title, Oedipus looms large, and it's no surprise that Aphex features on the soundtrack. Not the obvious choice though, 8MM already did that; instead it's an unexpectedly poignant moment that bridges a tonal shift nicely. I can handle the truth. *Slowly inserts a receipt spike into exposed brain* The dialogue is well written and makes Elijah Wood's character seem like he's reverted back to his 10-year-old self when talking to his dad. However, this felt like two different movies, both of which were great/fun rides, but combined into one with a dramatic tonal shift that was a total surprise. Had the tone been consistent, then it would have worked, but I forgot about the events in the first act while watching the third as there wasn't much overlap. I have a pen. I have a poo. Ah, poo pen. I can say that it opened with a beautiful title card.  My high really exposed the bad dialogue and genre transitions which in turn ruined my high.  The first two acts were great but it really flatlined at the middle where long and uncomfortable violence tried to revive it.  Seemed like the entire story was a collection of unfinished thoughts. Will this timid weak minded alcoholic with daddy issues will have enough balls to make it through the night of his life after watching his supposed daddy try to stab him and die in which to only find out that wasn't daddy after all and daddy is alive in the basement and he's not such a good guy either what will happen next it's a twister.

I just watched this movie with the hubby last night. It started Elijah Wood. It teresting to say the least, but it had some really funny parts, but it was also deeply disturbing. I think I spent too much time trying to figure out why things were happening (or not happening) than simply watching and of course I didn't guess the twist. Maybe the genre/tonal shifts threw me off. I think I wanted there to be a bit more emotion other than yelling/violence (and maybe the film did too) so the ending, while somewhat satisfying, did not hit me as strongly as it could have. Still, it was able to provoke a lot of emotional reactions, it's specially smart and meaningful to watch from a Brazilian perspective. Invisible Life is something different, it's universal, delicate and rough at the same time, and it's story has no need to explaining. we all know what it is about. Still, they explain (the only reason why it's not a 100% for me.
Carol Duarte and Julia Stockler are incredible. Also need to mention the short appearance from Brazil's greatest actress of all time, Academy Award nominee Fernanda Montenegro, not only for the name but mostly because, after 120 minutes of the movie, her performance was still able to reach out to the emotions you built for the characters in the past 2 hours.
Overall, absolutely beautiful. The film is a visual spectacle, but also a beautiful and touching story.

Tutto nel film è studiato e al servizio di un crescendo di emozioni che non lasceranno indifferenti. I colori saturi, la musica, le scene di vita quotidiana, il sesso visto in modo tuttaltro che romantico, fino alle ambientazioni fatte di fumo, sudore e calore. Tutto contribuisce a farci quasi sentire la realtà soffocante e senza via duscita cui erano costrette le due e, come loro, tante altre donne imbrigliate in esistenze che non appartenevano loro e non volevano. Karim Ainouz tells, in his emotional tropical melodrama, stories from a time when a woman was expected to be subordinate in every single aspect of her life. Guida and Eurídice, apart from each other, lived outrageous trajectories, and, unfortunately, with expressive scars that lasted until today. The lies of extremally conservative parents, the superb and envy of Eurídice's husband, the suffering in maternity, the crucial solidarity between desperate women - all of it built a strong indignation and, at last, everybody cries in the end: a real tragic one. Fernanda Montenegro is an acting gem.
With technical maestry, Karim's team guides the movie in a raw way. The cinematography of Hélène Louvart is outstanding capturing old, green and dirty Rio de Janeiro. Karim's directing choices are really touching and carry a whole bunch of social issues with flow. The cello and piano from Benedikt Schiefer are as unsettling as the character's obstacles.
I hope that when women (especially older ones) watch this movie, they identify themselves and keep fighting against the male authoritarianism, fighting for freedom.
I hope that when men watch this movie, they identify in themselves traces of sexism to keep changing, to keep evolving and encouraging other ones to be better.
It's definitely an incredible and important movie that answers the questions above with some of the multiple possibilites, multiple realities that exist. It's a must see.
