Popular reviews More Approached this one pretty blindly, basically just knowing Elijah Wood was in it and that I wanted to watch it because he was in it haha. Well it's a weird, wild movie that goes to some very strange places for sure. I enjoyed the dark humor, and it can be downright brutal at times too. I really liked the score too, eerie, often sort of whimsical; a great fit. I wasn't completely into some of the directions the story wound up going in, but I do give it credit for doing something different. B+ Best Films Of The 10's" Twisted, funny, suspenseful, shocking & violent. While I wouldn't call this an all out dark comedy its got its moments. I didn't know where it was going and the story is pretty original. It runs a little slow upfront though and I kinda wanted it to be even more insane at points. Still though, this was a pleasure... The back half made up for any slow parts easily and its just ridiculous enough without going overboard and feeling stupid... Possibly the strongest opener to FrightFest since The Guest. Darkly funny, bizarro, eye-wateringly vicious (never seen scissors and plastic wrap put to such brutal use. and impossible to second guess. It's got a mean streak as wide as a Chelsea Smile, flirting briefly with supernatural and psychodrama moves, before settling into its own psychotic groove. As you might expect, given the title, Oedipus looms large, and it's no surprise that Aphex features on the soundtrack. Not the obvious choice though, 8MM already did that; instead it's an unexpectedly poignant moment that bridges a tonal shift nicely. I can handle the truth. *Slowly inserts a receipt spike into exposed brain* The dialogue is well written and makes Elijah Wood's character seem like he's reverted back to his 10-year-old self when talking to his dad. However, this felt like two different movies, both of which were great/fun rides, but combined into one with a dramatic tonal shift that was a total surprise. Had the tone been consistent, then it would have worked, but I forgot about the events in the first act while watching the third as there wasn't much overlap. I have a pen. I have a poo. Ah, poo pen. I can say that it opened with a beautiful title card. My high really exposed the bad dialogue and genre transitions which in turn ruined my high. The first two acts were great but it really flatlined at the middle where long and uncomfortable violence tried to revive it. Seemed like the entire story was a collection of unfinished thoughts. Will this timid weak minded alcoholic with daddy issues will have enough balls to make it through the night of his life after watching his supposed daddy try to stab him and die in which to only find out that wasn't daddy after all and daddy is alive in the basement and he's not such a good guy either what will happen next it's a twister.

I just watched this movie with the hubby last night. It started Elijah Wood. It teresting to say the least, but it had some really funny parts, but it was also deeply disturbing. Of course, any movie that features the line “Semen contains more protein and nutrients than an ear, ” and opens with paired quotations from Shakespeare and Beyoncé, might not be entirely on the level. So thinks Norval (Elijah Wood) a music-industry poseur, of his out-of-the-blue summons to the isolated shoreside home of his long-estranged father. His misgivings only deepen when the drunken, mercurial man who greets him (Stephen McHattie) provokes a confrontation that leaves Norval facing more mayhem and mounting gore than his sensitive soul can comprehend. The first feature from the New Zealand director Ant Timpson, “Come to Daddy” initially exhibits an endearing strangeness thats reinforced by Daniel Katzs quirky camera angles and airily elegant framing. As the action narrows to an underground cell and, later, a series of swinger-stuffed motel rooms, the atmosphere becomes more claustrophobic and the plot substantially more nutty. It wasn't a 9/10 for me or a 5/10 either. I'll have to do a rewatch to get a better sense. I think I spent too much time trying to figure out why things were happening (or not happening) than simply watching and of course I didn't guess the twist. Maybe the genre/tonal shifts threw me off. I think I wanted there to be a bit more emotion other than yelling/violence (and maybe the film did too) so the ending, while somewhat satisfying, did not hit me as strongly as it could have. I definitely liked the music. I looked up a couple of the songs after. This was my favorite.
Basically, I'm looking for similar hardcore techno (the former) and noise-based* the latter) songs. I'm not big into electronic music (hence why you shouldn't be too harsh on me if I misgenred these two songs) but I do enjoy me some Aphex Twin at times. *Not pure noise, mind you; just noise influences.
